Decline of The Coliseum in Detroit, Michigan
As a pre_COVID regular at The Coliseum, I missed the action and the vibe. I decided to visit after a three year hiatus. (Saturday, May 20, 2023, 10:30pm). I was flattered that the valet parking attendant and, later, my favorite barmaid remembered me. That was the end of the vibe.
Mandatory valet parking is $8. Cover charge is $15.00. I did not pay for a booth, but I hear that those seats are $25-35. I stood at the bar in the rear.
This club has multiple stages, with the main long stage dominating the center of the room. In the past, it always had three dancers. This night no more than two. The four smaller satellite stages, closer to the bars and seating areas, were all empty. (Not like the old days.)
I was stunned when a dancer who had to be 300 pounds took center stage. I realize that "fat-shaming" is inappropriate, but this is a strip club where physical attraction is paramount, for most customers. What was management thinking when they hired this beast? Her pole dancing almost ripped the post from its moorings. Any guy who got a lap dance from her, would risk fractured femurs.
The Coliseum used to have mostly active and flirty dancers in the 8-10 range. No more. This evening all dancers were no better that 5-7, pudgy and lazy. And what's with dancers carrying small red plastic buckets? I was told that was for the money they made. Not an attractive addition to the costume.
