Mercenary Territory
First time in Memphis. The Memphis clubs are thinly reviewed, which suggests there may not be many locals on TUSCL. This club is just off an I-40 interchange in NE Memphis, in a standalone building amidst the typical chain restaurants, stores and hotels. The Lyft driver, a lifelong Memphis resident (as pretty much everybody you talk to seems to be) called it "North Memphis"). Appeared to be ample parking.
I arrived around 11:30 pm. The The bouncer/front door attendant, collected $20 (regular patron at bar said cover charge will fluctuate depending on time of night-he implied $20 was high-as discussed below, the charges for things here are pretty freewheeling). I received two free drink tickets in exchange, which I used for Heinekens. My third Heineken was $5, so the $20 cover seemed reasonable.
Like Pony, the other Memphis club I visited earlier in the day, PD only sells beer and NA beverages, although you can BYO alcohol for a setup charge. Unlike Pony, PD had a real bar, and not a desultory little counter, like some desultory hotel event room.
When you enter, the bar runs across the back on the left. There is a long, narrow stage that runs in front of the bar, with seating along both sides. In the far right front corner of the club is another stage with two poles. Whether, when and on which stage a dancer would perform was apparently at the whim of the dancers. If there was a DJ, he or she was mute.
At 11:30 pm on a Tuesday, there were maybe 3-4 patrons, and 12-15 dancers. The poor turnout probably explained why the stages were both empty most of the time, which was probably understandable. The place didn't seem to be overly managed. Both the patron at the bar and my driver back tot he hotel said the place was hopping later in the week and on weekends. The dancer:patron ratio facilitated my preferred strategy of sitting back and seeing who approached.
