The Hungry I started as a nightclub in the 1950's, starting the careers of comics, singers, and entertainer, including Woody Allen, Lenny Bruce and Barbra Streisand, but the name was later sold and emerged as a strip club on 545 Broadway St. As only one of three strip clubs in the North Beach area that serves alcohol, the Hungry I usually packs them in on Friday and Saturday. Cover is $15.00 but you can usual get a deal to get in by negotiating with one of the quite friendly bouncers out front of the club. The bar seats about 12 but unfortunately faces away from the stage. The club seats about 80 people, with small seats with tables facing the two pole stage.Drinks are quite expensive so it helps to do most of your drinking before you get in. As far as i can tell, the Hungry I has no clear standards in the type of dancer that works there, so you'll find a wide range of strippers-from goth to fat to quite attractive girls. Dances are $20 per song and 2 for 1 specials happen quite frequently, with the dancers taking you to the many open booths that line one wall. There is one champagne room there that does allow a certain amount of privacy but remember, this is a famous tourist area so extra's don't happen here. (Basically, the only club in San Francisco that does allow extras is the Mitchell Bros. O'Farrell Theater). Overall, this is not the usual high class gentleman's club but more of a good place to start before embarking on the strip club tour.
