Mostly Chicas Gordas?
Went on a Wednesday night around 11 PM. The club is located in an industrial area and like many buildings around it (and some of the dancers inside as I discovered) not showing its age well. I didn't necessarily feel unsafe but certainly didn't see a valet (if there actually was one) or any security. On a positive note, there was no cover at this time.
When I entered the club I found myself the third customer inside. Myself, an older white man, joining a 30-something black man sitting by himself in a high backed chair and a 20-something hispanic working a dancer at the bar. I picked out a high backed chair of my own facing the main stage. Immediately a waitress with very limited English came up and asked me something I interpreted as what would I like to drink. I asked for a bottle of water and glass of ice. This throughly confused her and she came back with a pen and piece of paper say something like "my English not good." I did my best to cobble together "glass of water" and "ice" in a combination of Spanish and English. She did figure it out and brought out a tiny 8 oz. fiji water with a whiskey sized glass of ice. The fun continued as she tried to tell me the price. Her "$6" sounded like "$16" and I had to resort to my memory of spanish numbers to ask her if it was really $16 or did she mean $6. (It was $6.) She was not able to make change for my $20 and had to go back to the bar. There was a brief period of panic when she did not return immediately with my change and I worried perhaps she thought keep the change. Fortunately she returned with correct change and I tipped her $2. So, $8 in so far.
There were dancers on 3 stages. All of them heavy set Latinas. (I only saw Latinas there during my brief visit although one told me she was Cuban so if the distinction is important to the reader I've used "Latinas" in a way that's inclusive of Cuban heritage as well and don't have good insight into what the split might be.) Some of the dancers sat in a dark area behind me talking to themselves so I could not discern all of the dancers but most of the ones I saw were on the heavier or heavier plus side. Latin music, as you'd expect, was blaring and I saw a mix of dancers who embraced the music in their stage shows and those simply going through the motions. I'm not that into watching overweight women dance no matter how enthusiastic they might be so perhaps I caught some dancers in an off moment or vice versa.
