Introduction:
With this review of Scruples, located in Oakford Pennsylvania, right behind the Neshaminy Mall and adjacent to US1, I will attempt to rectify the wrongs of previous reviews. Past reviews have dwelled on the trivial matters readers don't care about, such as the dancers, what they looked like, availability of extras, which dancers in particular I may have had occasion to take for lap dances, which occur in a private room located in the basement of this particular establishment, there are five such rooms, one of which is for courts. For all of the aforementioned, there is a black curtain for privacy. The doors have been removed. Incidentally, the dancer dressing room is also located in the basement and is adjacent to the room used for courts. These two rooms are closest to the staircase.
This review will cover the more important aspects of a strip club review, namely the bar itself, the chairs which surround it, the beverages it serves, the ice (cubed, crushed, or hybrid), coaster shape, ashtray color, straw composition (paper or traditional plastic), and any other crucial components you will need to know. I know it's against the current guidelines, but I might comment on the dancers and how entertaining my night was.
The Bar:
Scruples' bar is composed of wood. It is shaped like an "L". When walking in, the bar runs from left to right, and on the right hand side is where it bends to make the "L" shape. It's traditional bar height. If I had to guess, the wood stain is oak. There are lights that run underneath the lip of the bar. It's a nice touch, but the woodwork here isn't too ornate, so I didn't find myself looking down there for too long. The bar tops are a dark green color made to look like stonework, but it's not made of stone however. Too bad, as I find stone tops tend to keep beer cooler for a few minutes longer than veneer tops. It isn’t a deal breaker, at least not for me. Your tastes may indicate otherwise.
The bar surrounds the two stages, which are only raised about six inches above the floor. The stages are lighted. Each stage also has a pole for the dancers to use. The poles are metal and set vertical (i.e., set perpendicular relative to the floor).
The Seating:
For seating, Scruples provides wooden stools with four legs and a back rest. The stools are arranged around the bar, facing the stages. I can't recall if the stools where padded or not. My sincere apologies for not making a note of that. There are actually a couple of stools positioned at a lone pub table along the wall.
The Beverages:
Scruples serves many beverages. Beer comes in both draft and bottles. Draft beer is served in glasses, not mugs, but the glasses are chilled and typically the bartender will give you a new glass for each draft you order. The draft selection includes Budweiser, Bud Light, Miller Lite, Coors Light, Yuengling Lager, Sam Adams Seasonal, Angry Orchard, Stella Artois, Shock Top Belgian White, Goose Island IPA, Perpetual IPA, Yard's Brawler, Victory Hop Wallop, Lagunitas IPA, New Belgium Voodoo. In addition to beer, they serve mixed drinks in various glass types based on the drink ordered. The ice is chunked ice, which sits somewhere betwee cubed and crushed in terms of size, but is smooth edged and consistent in size. Sadly, your only option for soda is poured from the bar gun, so if you prefer bottled soda there isn't that option here. They do have bottled water.
Drinks vary in price, anywhere from $3 to $10. Domestic drafts cost less and during happy hour are $3. Craft beers like the Perpetual IPA run you $6. Shots also run the gamut between $5-7, depending on the brand of the spirit in question. I don't do shots, so I don't have complete information here. Perhaps another reviewer can go into greater detail on the pricing of shots. The same can be said for mixed drinks, though for designer cocktails they can run about $10 or so.
Coasters, Ashtrays, and Straws:
I didn't see any coasters used by the bar staff. Instead, they would place a cocktail napkin or two underneath your drink. If they really want to step their game up, they should start using branded coasters. Ashtrays are placed around the bar. They are easy to spot as they're molded out of red plastic. One other area they're behind the times on is the continued use of clear plastic straws.
Odds and Ends:
They have two pool tables. Beside one of the pool tables is a cigarette machine. There is a restroom. Unlike many establishments the men's and ladies bathrooms are not next to each other. The men's room is in one side of the bar and the ladies room is on the complete opposite end, past the dj booth.
The Dancers:
I'll be brief here, since nobody seems to care about this information. Scruples employ female dancers. Generally all of them have both of their arms and legs. I can also confirm every single stage name contains both vowels AND consonants. Dances are $25 for 4 minutes. That may be too explicit, so I'll stop.
