I was surprised to find my usual Providence haunt, the Satin Doll, closed on a Sunday afternoon. I decided to take my cash…and my chances…to Cheaters.

There’s not much I can say about this place that hasn’t already been mentioned. The nude room adds a $10 cover, and the hustle inside is aggressive. It’s dark, it’s dirty and you’ll see a lot of bad boob jobs and flab. The payment system is confusing, and the back room couches may qualify as biological hazards. (I overheard the barmaid trying to get someone to clean up the mess left behind in one of the rooms!) Nevertheless the back rooms remain the most consistent high-mileage experience in New England, though the price is high if you want your fifteen minutes of glory. In fact, the bouncer started making jokes about it. (Somehow I have a bad feeling about that.)

While my last visit to the back room was disappointing, my visit with Julia lived up to expectations. She was a Russian dancer visiting the club from New York. Not everyone’s type, but she made it fun. We actually had a pretty good conversation before the groping began. Go figure. While I think getting a repeat experience with her may be impossible in this crowded club, I’d certainly welcome the opportunity.
