Nice Dive
The final stop of my tour of Memphis strip club was the Purple Diamond. It’s tucked away in the corner of strip mall parking lot behind a Wendy’s. I got a TSA level pat down from a large bouncer. He said the cover was $17 and asked for my ID. When I showed him a military ID, he waived $7 of the cover, charged me $10, and gave me two drink tickets, so I guess beers are $5 each.
Purple Diamond is a dive level club, but is pretty roomy. There is a corner main stage to the right and another runway type stage to the left. In the middle toward the back there is an area with cubby’s for lap dances . The area offers little privacy as the cubby's are open, the walls are less than half-height and the they face each other.
I made my way to the bar, which is against the back wall and used my ticket to get a beer. The crowd here was mostly young and thuggish looking. There was a diverse complement of about a dozen dancers: white, Latina, AA, and a couple of Asians, with a range of body types, most reasonably good looking. The DJ played a range for music, mostly hip hop, but I was also pleasantly surprised to hear Bruce Springsteen’s Glory Road, which I probably haven’t heard in a strip club in more than 25 years.
