Visited: Sunday Afternoon

I'll start off by admitting that I'm normally a Brass Rail/Upper Brass guy when I'm in Toronto, but I was visiting recently in December and needed an escape from the Christmas shopping hell that is the Eaton Centre on a Sunday afternoon, so I ducked into the Zanzibar.

At first I wasn't even sure they were open, as there was some kind of work being done near the door involving a ladder (I think they were doing something to the TV mount above the main entrance), but it made me feel a little odd coming in. Once I was reassured that they were, indeed, operating that day, I found myself a table not far from the stage and got a beer ($9 for a Bud Light. Never that happy to pay that much for a beer, but that's what you should expect at these kinds of places). The bartender and staff were friendly. The club was clean, music was the right level, and the DJ wasn't too annoying (although he did seem to talk over the PA to the dancers to figure out dance order, rather than have that information ready).

There were only three girls working that shift (I overheard staff members discussing this, normally I am not particularly good at counting how many are in), and only two of them seemed to be working the floor trying to solicit dances. All three were white, one a bit older (I'd peg her as maybe late 30s or early 40s). They weren't too vampy, but did seem to linger awkwardly when I said I wasn't interested in a dance from them in particular.
