Great rush hour escape
While visiting North Austin clubs such as Perfect 10, Rick's and Foxy's, I've occasionally come across surprisingly cute dancers who mentioned the Landing Strip to me. I'd also been told, but haven't been able to verify, that the current Landing Strip is at the location of the former Red Rose (the one-time sister club of the Yellow Rose). So, recently finding myself in rush hour traffic, only to hear of yet another traffic accident in progress, I said "oh hell no" and decided it was time to make a visit to the Landing Strip.
There's construction going on around the club, and the parking seems somewhat limited. Then again, it's not a large club, although it does seem larger than the Yellow Rose. As you enter, the men's room is to the left, while the club is straight ahead through a short hallway. Decorating the hallway are posters from movies the club has been in - Varsity Blues, Planet Terror and Friday Night Lights. The bar is to the right, while across from the bar is the main stage, with side stages both left and right, and group VIP areas beyond each side stage. These VIP areas aren't very private, because they're really just raised sections off the floor which can have curtains drawn, but at least they do get you away from the main floor when it starts to get crowded. The basic setup and the lighting both reminded me of the Yellow Rose for some reason. It's a very clean and comfortable club.
I arrived around 5 pm, just at the start of happy hour. Cover was only $5, drinks were only $4, reserved seats were available for just $10, and the two VIP areas at either end of the club were just $40 for 30 minutes. Dances on the floor were $10 during happy hour I believe.
