Now I Know Why Judge Camp Liked This Place
I hadn’t been to the Goldrush in easily more than ten years. The last time I was there it was a white/mixed club. Of course, it has been considered a black club for quite a while now. This is also the place where Atlanta federal judge Jack Camp hooked up with a stripper for drugs and sex. She turned out to be an FBI informant, so things didn’t go so well for the judge when accompanied her on a drug buy with two loaded pistols. But anyway, I digress.
Yesterday I finished up some business early south of Atlanta and, driving up I-85, thought: “What the hell, let’s see what this place is like now.” Unlike Rumors a couple of days earlier, I’m glad I stopped in.
Goldrush is on Metropolitan Avenue, formerly known as Stewart Avenue, at one time probably the most notorious crime and prostitution ridden street in Atlanta. The city changed the name to Metropolitan Avenue years ago in an effort give the area a fresh start. It didn’t help. The area is still very sketchy. The Goldrush itself has always been pretty safe, nestled right next to the highway with a monitored parking lot, but you definitely don’t want to go wandering off the premises after dark, or even during the day.
