After a brief trip to the Tunica Cabaret, which was quite slow, I made my first visit to Babes this past Monday evening to check their variety. Knowing the type of clientele that Platinum Rose draws, I called ahead to Babes (the number was listed on a billboard on 61) to make sure I wouldn’t stick out like a sore thumb (no offense to those who prefer the ethnic clubs). The lady who answered the line said, “Oh, I know what you mean about that club but we’re not like that”. I decided to give it a shot and I now wish I had that gas back in my tank that I burned to get to this club….
After paying the $6 cover and walking into the club, I immediately knew I was out of my element. The music mix was entirely hip-hop, as were virtually all the customers. A quick walk through the club and I determined the dancers were virtually all black, so if that’s your preference you’ll feel right at home. I bellied up to the bar to order a domestic beer, which was $5. I had barely gotten settled onto my barstool before an endless parade of dancers started in on me. The average chat lasted less than thirty seconds before the proverbial, “Would you like a dance?” After shaking off the first three, the fourth decided she was going to make herself at home. She promptly pulled up a barstool and started chatting with me. I did my best to be polite but I was drinking my beer as quickly as possible while getting a quick verbal assessment of the club. From what I gathered, dances are 2 for $50 in VIP, but there wasn’t a girl whom I found worthy of investing in.
The club is rather large and has an enormous main stage in the center. There’s a swing on a secondary stage and pool tables in the back. I heard an ad on the radio that mentioned free Texas Hold ‘Em tournies on Sundays and another midweek day. Like I mentioned earlier, the club is almost entirely ethnic so keep that in mind. Some of the girls were quite friendly, though some were pushy and rude. Simply stated, I just didn't feel comfortable in this type of club. It’s not in a particularly desirable part of Memphis though the parking lot was well lit and attended. The staff seemed relatively friendly so that’s a plus. The club simply wasn’t the type of club I enjoy frequenting so my visit lasted only about ten minutes before I scurried back to the Cabaret.
