A couple months back, I had the opportunity to stop off at the paper moon, in Richmond. I think we visited the "Downtown" club but it did ot feel like downtown. After a few blocks on a dark, warehouse-laden street, I really felt like I was near some docks, though I don't think Richmond has any major waterway. In any case, I have had scarier drives to a club, so I didn't think too much about it. I was out for the evening with my usual wingman. We left our 19 year old friend in the hotel, much to his chagrin, because we believed the club to be 21 and up.

We parked the car and approached the club. There were 2 men out front, one appeared to be a bouncer and the other, a manager. They stopped us, not to check ids but for a brief conversation. They inquired if we had visited previously, we hadn't. They then gave us a brief rundown of some standard clubbing rules, implying that we might misbehave. I assured them that we were not clubbing amateurs and they could expect no trouble from us. Satisfied, they gestured our welcome to the club.

Inside the door was a hallway. On the left was stairs going up. The far end of the hallway had 2 doors, one on either side. Ahead a bit on the right was a window with a lady collecting cover. Now this is a boring and thankless job but I believe this person is responsible for the first impression of the club. In this case, the manager assuming we would be problems was the first impression. This lady was the second and it was worse. She was very rude, would NOT accept that the wingman and I wished to pay our cover separately and generally made it clear she did not appreciate us, our presence or our business. Oh well, no tip for her.
