I'd like to summarize the border crossing situation. The old crossing is still open and you walk up to it the same way. Because of construction, they have fewer lanes open, but the station is open all night, and there is still a Sentri lane and a Ready Lane. You can still cross both directions here between Mexico and the US.

At the new crossing you can only cross from the US to Mexico. It also has a ready lane and a Sentri Lane. Hong Kong's VIP car took me to the first crossing, but someone I met at the club told me they will also drive you directly up to the building at the new crossing, saving you a long walk. A cabdriver told me the walking path for new crossing, before you get to the US building, is quite dark at night and that robberies have taken place there; I'd appreciate hearing more about the situation. I did the walk during the day a few weeks ago and felt safe.

You are highly advised to get a Sentri card (even better, Global Entry) because it allows you to cross into the US with no wait, you go right to the front of the line. A passport card allows you to cross into Mexico with no record stamped into your passport pages.
