The first thing you need to know about Whispers is that it’s only a nighttime stripclub, at least during the workweek. I learned this the hard way.

I parceled out my itinerary for my vacation in Kansas City in such a way where I was hoping to drop by two bars in the same day, one in the afternoon and the other one in the evening. But which when? I had time in the afternoon, so I decided to go from the breastaurant Twin Peaks in Olathe all the way up to Basehor (pronounced “baser” and not “base whore,” unfortunately) to Whispers because the TUSCL reviews were a little more positive than Bonita Flats, my other choice. So I drove as fast as the law would allow so I could get up there and maximize my time having fun in there … only to see that they didn’t open until 5 o’clock. Shit.

At least I wasn’t rushed when I drove to Bonita Flats Saloon straight afterward (for which I have written a review already). I wanted to go to Whispers a second time the next night, after the Royals game. But even though I tried to bolt out of the Kauffman Stadium to beat the rest of the crowd watching the fireworks, I couldn’t find my car in the vast parking lot of the vast Truman Sports Complex. Helplessly I saw small wave after small wave followed by a huge crush of people, all of whom were able to go directly to their cars and leave before I could. So I had to wait until everybody cleared out to actually find my damn rental, which, I think, was over an hour after I left the ballpark.
