Went back to the Mint for...
Went back to the Mint for the first time in years after leaving Tootsies Saturday (stayed up that way rather than going further south so I’d be closer to Lauderdale). I stopped going when they raised the late-night price to 20, but decided to go ahead and pay it since the low price point for dances (5) would even it out.
Club still looks mostly the same, except for two things. One, they changed the location of the DJ booth – thank God. I hated the old location: it was right in the middle of everything, even though it was in a corner. Mint is basically a U-shape in the front room surrounding the bar and stage. The DJ booth used to be in the lower right corner of the U with the door being at the upper right hand corner, which made it really hard to get around. The second room connects at the lower left hand corner, so that corner where the DJ booth used to be was awful because of the traffic. Now the booth is at the upper left hand corner, out of the way and in a corner of the club where hardly anyone goes. The second thing is that there are now booths with curtains (I think they had curtains) in the second room. I think there are four.
Now, the place where they upgraded tremendously is the talent. Mint used to have mostly “bullet wound” women who couldn’t get jobs anywhere else if their lives depended on it. The women in there Saturday were mostly solid 8s. I was shocked. It was basically an “okay, first girl who approaches gets a yes” situation as opposed to having the Heisman pose ready like I used to. Oddly enough, no one approached me. I knew Mint was a neighborhood spot, but I expected to get approached left and right. Didn’t happen. It felt like I was at a white club (hopefully the lack of PC isn’t a problem, but it’s just a matter of experience that I get approached far less at white clubs). I enjoyed the music, though; so I didn’t care. Kind-of figured someone would eventually, and someone did.
