Based on recent, non-negative reports, I visited Cheaters this afternoon on my way south from the Red Sox game.

Normally there is no cover until 6 PM - I walking in the door at 6:02 PM - $5 cover charge. But, I paid it since I was a couple of minutes too "late".

A lot of what everyone has been saying is true - they have been making some physical improvements; the ratty metal railings around the "upper" area just in front of the stairway leading up and back to the bar have replaced with wooden bar-like platforms, and the torn faux-leather stools have been replaced. The floor seemed cleaner, and even the upstairs bar has been spiffed up a little and the tiny dance stage upstairs appears to be about 3 times bigger. But, other than that nothing else has been done (I didn't get a chance to see the new dance booths, but the topless area seems the same).
