From its advertisements Spyce is clearly trying to portray themselves as Portland's high-end strip club; glossy, handouts with the strippers nicely photoshopped, talk of "upscale this" and "gentleman that", and generally hyping it to be a Vegas-type experience. Well, Vegas it ain't. Spyce fits nicely into the typical Portland strip club experience: small club, not much excitement and dancers whose interest in lappies ranges from poor to non existant. If you want high mileage, avoid. If you want a large number of dancers and a festive atmosphere, someplace like Dolphin II in Beaverton would be better. For example, I went to Spyce on a Saturday late afternoon/early evening. It is in a good location, right next to several good bars in the heart of the action. I walked in and was told be the girl at the front that there was no cover but that she worked for tips. I guess telling me that she worked for tips was actually the work she was doing for those tips because that's the only thing she told me. Whatever. I gave her a $5 thinking that maybe I would keep in her good graces just in case I wanted to get some more info. I walked in and there was 1 dancer working on the first stage. One. With 4 guys watching her lounge around while nursing their beers. It looks like there may be more to the club, but everything else was roped off to us. So, I sat down with a beer and waited to see if the next girl would be better. Nope. There was another stripper wandering in and out of the back, but she never talked to anyone and never approached the stage. The one unlucky girl was it. After about 30 mins of watching the same bored damsel, I finished my beer and headed out. I have no idea how this place stays open with no action even on a Saturday evening, but there you have it. So, to sum it up, typical small Portland club, head in only if you want a woman dancing naked in close proximity when you down your beer, but don't expect anything like a real strip club experience. Actually, the club was clean, so they may be a step above some other of the locals. But that bar is pretty low.
