2nd -- they do not inform you that they will do so.

The two managers that I spoke to about this spent a little time trying to convince me that there was some important distinction between "photographing" my ID and "recording" it (via video camera) and various other fun distractions before one of them eventually justified the policy by saying that it was so they could identify who was in the club in case 'something happened'.
