My first trip to TJ. I traveled alone on a Thurs. late afternoon and I had no problems. Like any new place though, don't go looking for trouble and be aware of your surroundings at all times.

Park on the US side and walk across. Take the last exit (Camino de la Plaza) before Mexico and turn left, crossing over I-5. Park in the lot behind the Jack in the Box near the border entrance, on the east side of I-5. $5 for 8 hrs, the lot attendant is friendly, seems to be safe. You should have left valuables at home or in the hotel but if you still have them leave them in the car, including your wallet. You just need ID and maybe an ATM and credit card and of course cash. Bring lots of dollar bills to give tips. The border entrance is near the San Diego Trolley stop, go up the stairs and walk across. No document check, easy.

Once you get to the Mexican side there are taxi dispatchers wearing IDs around their neck who will guide you to a waiting taxi. I took a yellow taxi to Adelitas $5 + $1 tip. The ride takes about 10 minutes and goes to the red light district where all the bars are. I don't speak Spanish but language was not a problem--they know enough to get you where you want to go.
