The Cyclical Nature of Little Darlings
Little Darlings has, off and on, been my absolute favorite club in greater San Diego. They are mildly famous in the local club community for having a drug bust by the SD Sherriff's department about 9 years ago.
The club is located in a mostly industrial area on the outskirts of Lemon Grove. It's wedged under a freeway interchange with a big-enough parking lot that seems to be in need of some TLC. Their location outside of the jurisdiction of San Diego PD has, at times, made this a much more favorable club in terms on the length of your dollar. When entering, you go to a window where one of the nice girls charges you cover (it was $25 which included one small drink). As you enter the club, the main room has a decent amount of seating (unless there is a special guest) and one stage. The VIP and lap dance area is against the back wall with a good amount of privacy. The clientele is usually split between old dudes, like me, and young guys. I would guess that 90% of the people in there are either younger than 25 or older than 45.
The women now, and almost always have been, mostly black and Hispanic with a mix of white and Asian girls from time to time. Most of the girls are on the younger side and body types range from unhealthy thin to girls with a few extra pounds. It's always seemed to me the San Diego stripping equivalent of the Las Vegas break-in houses for new dealers. It's not been uncommon, for me, to see a complete change in lineup over the course of a couple months. My last visit there were probably about 7-8 girls who were all sub-25 years old. Some people think that this is the dregs of strip club talent, but they were all relatively attractive with a couple lookers. Other San Diego patrons will point out that Cheetah's has a much better lineup with more girls at all times, and they are right. One of the odd, or more uncomfortable things is hardly anyone sits on the rail. Girls are dancing at nobody half the time and wander the floor collecting a pittance in tips after the dance.
Where they used to shine was in the private dances. When they ran specials you'd be looking at three dances for $20 + tip for the lady. They've changed their policy now and the club (from what I can tell) gets $10 per dance, and the dancers can charge what they want on top of that (most of them quoted an additional $20). A three for two now starts at $60 with the money for the lady before the music starts. Throw in hustling for tips on top of that and it adds up. They've also progressed, over time, from simple cash transaction for dances to feeding the bill acceptor that counts your time. One of the biggest buzzkills in strip clubs in my opinion. Back in "the day" you used to be able to get a little extra time here and there.
A bigger disappointment was the interactivity, or lack thereof. They've very much gone to the look but don't touch model where it seemed to me that girls used to encourage, if not demand, that you interacted with them during the dances. I'm not sure if this is legal, ownership, or just a change in the nature of the business for the girls. It has really killed the grungy vibe of the club that used to be a great selling point.
I spent about $125 my last visit of about 45 minutes. It wasn't worth it. I'm sorely disappointed that it has gone to where it is now.
