Regardless of which side of the aisle you approach the posts in this discussion from, I expect that -unless you are here on a temporary visa- you will be happy to be a citizen or LAWFUL immigrant in the shining city on the hill. America is not perfect. America is not as great as it once was. America is still the greatest nation in history and the last best hope for freedom, self-determination, and republican government. Never before in history as any country accumulated as much wealth and power, and used it so selflessly to help others - often to our own detriment. Remember that our founding fathers tried every possible avenue to reconcile with the King across the ocean in England, asking for as little as representation in their parliament to have a voice in the government of their own affairs. It took a war, the first war of its kind, to obtain the freedom of electing our own leaders that we take as our birthright. The Revolutionary War was revolutionary in its thinking, in its intent for colonies to be independent of the empires that once controlled them. We may not always elect the leaders that individual voters choose, we may often disagree vehemently with the policies and laws passed by those elected officials. However, I hope we can all agree that the greatest break-up letter in history is as true, word-for-word, today as it was 250 years ago on July 4th, 1776. Actually despite our flaws and we do have several, we are truly the greatest country in history. Why else would people from all over the world want to come here and start over even before the handouts and freebies? Why would other countries want to steal and copy our ideas and technology?
250 years, time flies, seems like only yesterday. Looking forward to the next 250! Happy Birthday USA!

The key is a "More Perfect Union", knowing that perfection is impossible for humans.

Anyone watch the DC fireworks in-person? I know someone who went, haven't heard back from her yet - I'm a Board member with her) and other couple who did Mt Rushmore.
PBS covered Mt Vernon and I found it boring.
I did watch the DC fireworks on cable, and was really impressed with the music and 'works. The best part people were moved indoors, and were in the same facility as WWII vets that were invited, so unexpected interviews were had. That was excellent.
In 2002 I was working in Cherry Hill, NJ and took AmTrak to Penn Station to watch the fireworks. I was also in Cherry Hill during 911 - I did a year back/forth weekly travel weekly.
I was listening to SiriusXM while driving and someone ran down all the accomplishments America has made since 1776. Aside from the US Constitution: canals, trains, electricity, telephone, industrial revolution, cars and the assembly line, gasoline, the use of fossilized raw materials, ending WWI and WWII, computers, nuclear energy, cell phones, smartphones, transoceanic cabling, LASER, GPS, fibre optics (Alexander Graham Bell actually had a patent approved for transmitting phone calls via light - he was the Father of Fibre Optics) planes then 65 years later landing humans on the moon and back, the Internet, and on and on. Yeah, other countries have done some amazing stuff, however, not like what America has done over 250 years.
Really impressive. America has brought out an amazing list of accomplishments for an "experimental" gov't that is 250 years old - I hate it when they call it Experimental. What we do works if we follow the original plan. The Experiment that always fails is Socialism and Communism.
