A security guard fatally shot someone who fired a gun during a fight outside a northwest Dallas strip club early Wednesday, police said.
The shooting happened about 5 a.m. at the Dallas Cabaret South in the 2400 block of Walnut Ridge Street, near Interstate 35E.
During a City Council briefing Wednesday, police Chief Eddie García said “chaos” broke out after a fight among strip club patrons. Police said the initial fight happened inside but multiple other fights took place outside after security kicked the patrons out of the club.
One person took out a gun and fired into the air. When a man in the parking lot pulled out his gun in response, the first person fired toward him, García said.
A security guard then fatally shot the first person. The victim’s name has not been released.
”A life was lost. Lives were in danger. Certainly lives will be changed by this,” García said.
The investigation is ongoing, police said, and no additional information was made available. It was unclear whether charges would be filed.
In November, Dallas police started working on recommendations to submit to the City Council to change the hours strip clubs can be open. While several Texas cities already have restrictions in place, Dallas has no rules for when sexually oriented businesses can operate, and closing times for strip clubs can range from 2 to 6 a.m.
Police said they believe the new hours would help curb crime in and around strip clubs and other sex-based businesses in the city, some they’ve linked to human trafficking.
